MAMMOTH GATHERING: The car festival at Nayakanahatti village in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district on Monday.
A large number of people on Monday witnessed the Sri Tipperudraswamy jatra and the rathotsava at Nayakanahatti village in Challakere taluk.
The main attraction of the jatra was the pulling of the nearly 75-ft-high and 20-ft-wide chariot.
Although the eight-day jatra began on March 16, the rathotsava, a significant part of the jatra, was held on Monday.
According to the temple authorities, about two lakh people from all parts of the district and neighbouring ones had come to witness the car festival.
Some people climbed the trees and others occupied the terraces of nearby buildings to witness the chariot being pulled.
Several people offered bananas to the deity as the chariot passed by. A large quantity of copra was burnt as part of the rituals.
Since animal sacrifice was in vogue some years ago, the district administration had banned the slaughtering of animals in a 2-km area around the temple.
